When the news broke that the body had finally been identified as that of the Scottish woman, Elizabeth Jane Ross, he made sure to buy another mobile phone and another SIM card. Then, using this phone, he began to send messages to his girlfriend, Elizabeth’s family, and her friends, pretending to be a terrorist. He wrote in these messages that he was Elizabeth’s killer and that he committed the murder because the victim was a Christian and was trying to proselytize people.

The Afghan man’s religion is ‘unclear,’ as testimonies indicate that he often appeared to change his faith. He had at times embraced Islam and Christianity, while at one point he claimed to be Orthodox and at another, Catholic.

Kypseli: The perpetrator’s motive is unclear

The motive for the murder is also unclear. Did he kill Elizabeth due to religious fanaticism or because he wanted to rob her? On the other hand, would he kill a woman to take 10,000 euros, buy an expensive mobile phone, and have a few thousand euros on him? These are some of the questions that have concerned the relevant officers of the Hellenic Police (EL.AS.).

The 26-year-old had been living in Greece for about 10 years and is a boxer. His physical strength explains how one person was able to carry a suitcase with a body on his own. He allegedly knew that Elizabeth was financially well-off, as she was the daughter of a well-known lawyer from Scotland. He also knew about her trip to Greece, which was her favorite country.

► Murder of British woman in Kypseli: The 26-year-old Afghan man arrested is a professional boxer

When the 38-year-old left the home of the Greek family that was hosting her in Keratsini, she took the keys from an American friend and moved into an apartment in Exarcheia used as accommodation for members of a religious organization. Elizabeth was a volunteer for this organization, which is an NGO based in Zimbabwe. The 38-year-old had long wanted to contribute through volunteerism.

He acted as if nothing had happened

The Hellenic Police (EL.AS.) investigation revealed that the murder took place on July 15, 2026. After committing the crime, he put the body in the suitcase and, with a composure that defies human comprehension, transported it to an abandoned building in Kypseli.

— iEidiseis.gr (@iEidiseisGR) August 3, 2026

In the days that followed, the Afghan man acted as if nothing had happened.
